Building Fist Surf Rod

I have built a lot of my rods but all have been more standard boat rods. I am going to be building my first surf rod (spinning) and trying to decide what to use for the grip material. What is everybody's favorite material or least favorite?

The materials I have considered are

-cork tape

-X flocked heat shrink

-textured tape

-x wrapped cord under heat shrink

-tightly wrapped cork (think deckhand rod)

I imagine this comes down to mainly preference and would like to know what people prefer who have used them.

Lastly I am going to be using the rod to fishing primarily for strippers off fire island throwing artificials, I am looking at the Rod Geeks SRF100MMF2 * from what I have gathered this seems adequate. If not should I go heavier? Or if there is a different blank you like let me know

Thanks

It’s all about preference, I like straight shrink tubing on the blank .. it’s just what’s comfortable to me , and after a bunch a years when it’s effed up , just cut off and reshrink  and touch up the epoxy ramp at top and back in business for a bunch more years

I would also recommend taping the the guides on and going out and test casting with the reel and line you plan on using , moving the stripper up or down and reel seat up or down and see how it changes .. you want the line to shoot of as quietly and effortlessly as possible .. an inch one way or the other def makes a difference..

you should go search the rod building forum .. there’s loads and loads of great info in there

I still like cork tape the best. It's easy to apply, is durable and provides a good grip without being too hard on soft, wet hands. It's also easy to strip off and replace.

^^ This is my favorite. Though I prefer a full cord grip. It's the bees knees for surf rods: it's way better, for me, than anything else, including cork tape, which I despise.

I use tarred seiners cord almost exclusively these days. It's beyond durable, cheap, won't dry rot, and stays grippy regardless of how much blood/fish snot you throw on it.
