"Abu Ambassadeur Mag Elite 5500 CS"

ME5500CS.jpg.5315752a5eb9e66ed7b07b8727537c3d.jpg

I originally got this reel about 15 years ago brand new as NOS(New Old Stock) thanks to an act of kindness from another SOL member who located them from his local store.

I think this reel was first introduced back in 1995 and had some Copyright issues with its name and discontinued the production few years later.

I've seen ones without "Mag Elite" name a few times and believe that was a brief post law suit production which I don't think it lasted either.

So that makes this reel being manufactured 20+ years ago easily, I believe.

This is one reel that I go back again and again for the surf plug casting here in No-Cal as I am totally happy with its distance performance and consistency.

As I had so much expectations on this reel from my previous ME 6500 CS use and  it was already out of production , I ended up getting two of them and saved one to this day.

After 15 years of use, the first one is still going strong - may be a bit loose and worn here and there but still strong - so I needed an excuse to open this box.

Well, I decided to say Happy Birthday to ME.... ;)

I had some upgraded replacement parts ordered and lined up as well.

Those are listed below with some pics taken during the upgrade...

- Carbon drag washer kit

- Power handle

- ABEC 7 spool bearings

- Cog wheel gear with integrated bearing

- Level winder worm gear with two bearings

- Ceramic pawl for level winder worm gear

Thank you and it just takes some practice and  discipline of keeping things in order...

I am no longer able to reach what I used to 10 years ago but still manage 100~130 yards with needles and tins...

Fun reels

Box says 255 meters (~=about 280 yards) of 0.30 mm line, which is the thickness of Spiderwire 30lb braid.

I don't seem to have my 6500 box any more but guessing it will give extra 40-50 yards capacity.

Wow !

Never knew they made a Mag Elite in a 5500 size

The best conventional reel for various surf plug casting, IMHO.

Certainly better than my ME 6500's, which are nice, but specially with lighter metal lip / bomber type of lures can't beat 5500.

I also sorta like my Lexar 300XS-P among more recent reels I've tried and it did came close to ME 5500.

I found it to be actually better than ME on  drag and line retrieval speed.

Though, it failed me big time with its level winder that disengages on cast combined with its tiny guide hole design.

Lexar300-guide.jpg.211f3e463b0064fa7fa5f20b60e8d92a.jpg

Cost me 4-5 plugs and few spool's of 30lb braids as they would broke off mid casts.

Hard way to learn a lesson that I have to center its guide position before EVERY darn cast.

A cheat or stupid design, I dunno...

Also even with that precaution, I only can get about 80-85% of my ME5500 distances.

Close but not quite a surf "casting" reel yet, I think.

Haven't tried those Akios yet.

Heard good things about them but couldn't shake off the feeling of endorsing a knock-off.:freak:

Nice reel I'd like to come across a couple more myself. The 5500 was also made with the CT frame.

Oooooooooooh! Nice......

Ever tried casting it with 15-20# braids w/ shock leader and 4 Oz torpedo lead?

Bet you won't be able to see the splash...

Ummm, on the second thought, may be better not. You could lose entire spool of fresh braid, I am afraid....:bucktooth:

I just about dump that spool with the 12# mono on it, for fishing purposes I use the Blue Yonders in 6500 size or the 6500 C3CT MAG.
