First surf trip, first saltwater fish

I got out to IBSP this weekend on my first surf fishing trip.  Caught my first fish.  An 18" Blue.  Learned a lot.  First thing I learned is I have a lot to learn.  But overall I consider it a successful morning.

Caught the blue on a Mullet fished on a bottom rig.  Then lost a nice lure while casting on my conventional rig.  Even though I have a lot of experience on conventional bass rigs I didn't have enough thumb pressure, bird nested, and cut the line.  Too focused on watching the lure go out.

Lot's of kids fishing in the kids tournament.  I didn't see any catch anything.  Hopefully a few had success.

(I'm going to assume everyone figures there might be some small blues off IBSP in September so I don't think I am burning a spot.)

I can see surf fishing can be addicting.  I have a lot of vacation built up and October sounds like a good time to use it on Jersey beaches.

Sounds like you had a good time Steve!

Good luck in the fall.

Maybe get a spinner for plugs? No more birds nest, just wind knots :)

I have to work with spinners more.  Get used to them on larger rods.

Sounds like the beginning of a beautiful addiction.

My 3 YO grandson was along with his kiddie rod.  He can't wait to get big enough to fish for real.  So I think two addicts.

Don't go too big if you're buying one is my experience.

9 foot St Croix triumph rated to 2 1/2 oz or equivalent works for NJ plugging in most cases. 5k reel.

Will handle the big blues and stripers.

See you out there!

Hopefully you have some extra money laying around to help you with your new addiction,  everything is bigger including the prices !
