ksong
J Adams is right. There is not enough water in rivers and coho stay in the mouth of rivers. Edited September 9, 2019 by ksong
ksong
Good coho fishing. I had around d 20 coho, mostly released, using prototype 9'6"Black Hole 1,/3oz - 1 1/2oz rod. It is not over yet. After brief rest, I resume fishing

ksong
I fished again in the late afternoon. I was the only guy who wanted to fish and all other 8 anglers wanted to rest. Fishing was unreal. I had 12 coho on spinning rod and 2 even on fly rod in two hours fishing. Guide John took me to the spot which is close to the lodge. I took video of his casting and fighting coho on fly rod. He cast farther than me with spinning rod and caught more than I did .

Situk river is below 50 CFS ,average for this time of year is in the 400's I was there the last two years ,last year dry too,but not this bad,the year before had plenty of rain. They're saying lowest water in 30 years but rain on the way.

ksong
I thought yesterday was great. But today was even better. I even landed coho on fly rod. Our 9 fishermen are the only group within 60 miles. Water level in rivers are low and coho are in the mouth of rivers. I tested new 9' Black Hole rated 1/4 oz - 1 oz rod. I thought the rod is a little weak for coho. After landing 50 coho with the rod, I am convinced the rod is good for albie or striper upto 20 lb. ksong
Icy Bay Lodge is located 60 miles off Yakutat, AK. Nobody fish there except lodge guest.
ksong
I fished coho in front of Icy Bay Lodge, AK alone. The only concern was bear. I carried bear spray.
ksong
In retrospect, coho salmon fishing on spinning rod and fly rod are very enjoyable and fun in relaxed atmosphere. The Icy Bay Lodge is top class lodge and provides everything with excellent guides, food and lodging. The lodge is located in remote areas off Yakutat, AK. So only quests of the lodge can fish there. Sometimes, I was fishing alone. The only concern was bear and I carried bear spray. As the water level of the rivers was low, we fished from beaches protected in the bay. Actually I prefer to fish from the beaches for fresh coho. There were lots of salmon and I could catch 50 plus salmon every day. The choice of lure was Blue Fox Vibrax #4. It weighs only 8 oz, but I could cast pretty good using prototype Black Hole light rods. I am pretty new to fly fishing. But coho were everywhere and I could catch 29 coho on fly rod on the last day. Now, I want to try steelhead on fly rod out of Yakuta in the next spring. Edited September 16, 2019 by ksong
ksong
Background is Mt Saint Elias, the second tallest mountain in Alaska. We are very fortunate to see the full view of the mountain as it is very rare. Edited September 17, 2019 by ksong
