New reels are better just don't last as long under abuse. Love my squidder and jigmaster though would put them up against most new conventionals any day :p

Have had a 5000 gosa since July hasn’t been dunked, but I fish a lot. Week long trip to the canal one to mtk for a few days and gears let go yesterday on a smaller bass. Done blowing up reels I have 4 Stradics in my garage all need to be serviced and are hurt. Great reels love them! But they will need rebuilds every season or other if you fish hard. That being said done spending the money every other year... collection started today

The line on there is Big Game #25 mono . . . I just installed a Newell spool today and need to get new line, due to the increased line capacity over the stock Penn 140L spool in the pics.

Tight Lines !

New reels do pretty much everything better.

There are just a few dinosaurs that are invincible.

And people constantly bring them up.  And more often than not it's a reel used in the surf or an old conventional.

I think the one aspect of older reels that out performs current reels are felt drag stacks.  2019 felt isn't close to what it used to be.

For freshwater.....it doesn't apply...new is better. Pretty much across the board outside some 90's abus

For a conventional surf reel a Newell is still hard to beat. There are other reels that preform equally good but I can't say that they are better.  The p series have very light spools and with a small stationary mag they put it out there .

ez2cDave, what does that Accurate Squidder weigh?

Hi, Brian !

With the reel "dressed" exactly as seen in the photo's and an EMPTY Newell spool, it weighs 20.1 oz.

The Rod Clamp weighs 1.1 oz. by itself . . .

According to PENN Catalog 39B, from 1983, a "Dead Stock" PENN 140L SQUIDDER weighs 18 oz.

The Newell spool is somewhat lighter than the stock 140L Aluminum spool, but I don't have an empty one to weigh, right now.

By comparison, a "modern-day", graphite-framed, Daiwa Sealine-X 30SHA weighs 17.1 oz. , but only has 2/3 the line capacity of the Squidder. Yes, the 30SHA has 6.1 gears, making it very fast, compared to the 3.3 gears of the Squidder . . . But, the Squidder has "cranking power", when fighting a fish !
