clear coat removal

I stupidly left a good rod in the roof rack of my truck for a few weeks in South Fllorida. The clear coat looks wrinkled and peeling. Can the clear coat be removed and replced? do the guides need to be replaced?

It is unlikely that the finish on the wraps is effected.

Yes the original finish can be removed and then blank re finished.

Not easy to get factory  type finish without some experience.

Do you want to do this work yourself. If not suggest you get a proper rod builder to do it rather than a tackle shop job.

Yes,I would have it done professionally> The cost will be the main factor.

Agree. Must admit it is not a job I enjoy doing.

Afraid I have no idea at what most builders would price a job

like this at.

Hope it works out ok for you.

Give Lami a call an ask what they used for a clear coat ,  it will not hurt it might help ,

saying that, let the builder you chose do the leg work

If it were mine I would just tape up the guides and guide wraps, sand the rod between the guides with 600 grit paper, and spray the areas with clear poly. Permagloss is a better finish for rods but can be a PITA to do touch-ups with.

Could it be that someone clear coated it after ?  You don't see to many factory finnishes peal off.   If I didn't like the finish I would use some fine wet sandpaper and take the loose flakes off and recoat  with a thin coat of poly.  bring the gloss back.

Factory finish will come off if you leave the rod on the roof of your car. the uv damage is way worse than the salt. paying someone could get expensive. i have had issues with permagloss adhering to other finishes so coating the blank without stripping the guides off might be an issue. if you are just going to clean it up between the guides and coat it you might want to try it yourself

People leave them in the sun al the time.  Very bad for the finish.

I see them in rod holders on boats all the time. They just leave them there at the dock or mooring.  I have seen them go bad under the T top also.  Its very hot under the T top.
