6'9" Black Hole Challenger Bank 691 UL ( ultra light ) for fluke bucktailing

I tested the light 6'9" Black Hole Challenger Bank 691 UL spinning rod for fluke in Montauk and Nantucket shoal.

I observed that regular guys on the party boat out of Montauk are using very light rod for fluke bucktailing and they are doing better than other anglers.

I used sinker or bucktail upto 6 oz and I don't see any problem to fish 50' - 70'.

On the first trip out of Montauk, I could get limit by 10 am using the ultra light rod.

On Nantauket trip yesterday, I tested the rod using upto 8 oz and I could hold the bottom as current was moderate.

I got my limit upto 9 lb with the Challenger Bank 691UL and IRT 300 combo.

You can feel any slight bite and I did not drop many fluke by setting hooks high.

I don't have any picture as I left my phone camera in the  car. 

 

I fished on a party boat out of Montauk today.

I dropped many big fluke today, not because I couldn't set the hook properly, but because fluke did not take bait fully/

As usual, some anglers using light rod did very well.

 

Some prefer heavier 7'3" Black Hole Challenger Bank 731 M or 7'6" Challenger Bank 761MH, but I recommend to use lighter Black Hole Challenger Bank 701 L or 691 UL for fluking when you can use sinker upto 10  oz.

Always wanted to know. Why did you guys design the rod with the reel seat hood/locking mechanism placed by where your thumb and index fingers normally hold the rod? Normally it’s flipped on a spinning rod, making it more comfortable because those fingers would be resting on cork or foam.

Kilsong, two questions. If the light rod is good up to ten ounces, how much more lead can the 731M comfortably handle? Second, were the fluke caught being caught on bucktails or on teasers rigged above the bucktails?

Yes. The rod is good for tog jigging. 

We landed 25-30 lb gag grouper on a recent dry tortugas trip using the rod.

Kil this rod became my new favorite. I caught some big fluke but waiting for a doormat. Mine is a custom spinning rod. They did a fantastic job on this blank.
