Register small boat with trolling motor?

I was wondering if you need to register a kayak, small boat or even an inflatable boat if you put on a trolling motor in NJ?

I know you don't need a license, but do you need to register the boat?  In VA it is required to register anything with a motor, even a trolling motor.

I figure my Intex Seahawk 500 would do well trolling around the back bays.

I believe any time you put a powered motor on a watercraft, you must register the watercraft. I took the boating exam a couple of years ago and I want to say that was one of the things that surprised me.

Yes, very absurd but once you put a motor on any kind of watercraft whether it be gas or electric it must be registered according to New Jersey law. Any way New Jersey can collect money from you they will. The most corrupt state in the country needs your money. All they can get.

And I agree, you do need to register.

Yes.  I will pay registration fee of what?  $40? to register my inflatable boat, that I got in 2007 for $40 at a Walmart, so I can put a trolling motor on it and possibly putt around the bay maybe twice a year..

The reality is nobody is sure. Ask the DMV they don't know or you will get multiple, conflicting answers. If it's under 12 feet you don't need to register. It's a very gray area. I don't think anybody will bother you for an electric trolling motor.

My luck, I get pulled over by a wildlife officer boat with all his lights flashing.

"Watcha got in the cooler son?...Holy Hanna!  Zeke!  Take a look at this!  This guys got A TROLLING MOTOR!"

Hands up Perp!  We're taking you in!  Don't you realize the wake from your motor could disturb the nesting areas of the purple spotted whiffle bird!  Not to mention the damage to shoreline enjoyed by the fine citizens of New jersey!  We can't have "your kind" zipping around our pleasant bays and inlets with those fancy trolling motors!

"Well well, looky here! We got ourselves a real rebel in our midst! Thinks he can just zip around New Jersey waters with an unregistered high powered watercraft. Well I got news for you mister, your days of endangering the ecology and the citizens of this fine state ends right here. Just how many unregistered pounds of thrust have we got here on this fancy trolling motor deputy?" "Looks like thirty six boss." "THIRTY SIX!!! Call for backup! We're dealing with one sick son of a b--tch here!

On the contrary. My brother and I had a 12-foot jon boat when we were broke college kids. We both had canoe paddles and that got us out on the water. We scraped up enough money to buy a trolling motor and battery and took the boat to Round Valley. A ranger was at the ramp and hassled us because we put the trolling motor on the stern but the boat wasn't registered. He said if we want to launch, we have to take the trolling motor off. We registered the boat a few days later. There has been an explosion in the number of makes/models of kayaks that use electric motors and they all have to be registered. It's all a flipping money grab.

You guys are hysterical. Not far from the truth either! The Socialist republic of New Jersey feels like bizzaro world and humor helps me cope with the insanity. True story...every time I go away on vacation(not often) Im too embarrassed to tell people what I pay for property taxes. Its like self admitting Im retarded.

In the 80's into the 90' s I had an 8' Coleman Crawdad that I loved. Fit right into the back of my van. Had a Motorguide stern mount trolling motor on it. I used it all over the state ( no big waters ) and never once had an issue. I was told by DMV that because it was under 10' , I didn't have to register it.
