In the mid 70s, John Gibbs experimented with some purple pencils. A huge three hook pencil weighting over 5oz, in a wild shade of purple, he developed to imitate a frightened squid. He gave a few of his select friends a couple as samples, only asking we report results.

The results arrived the next morning. Fish we're refusing other offerings, often thrown right on a break, to inhale the new color. An instant hit.

Received a call from a friend who said "watched guys pulling in squid non stop from a local bridge yesterday, 11 AM in the morning" crazy stuff:):)

Bob, if you have one of those purple squid pencils handy, can you post a picture?

Sorry Brian, the last one met it's end decades ago. John Gibbs ran a limited production, which pretty much went to his close friends. He did produce a small run available to the general public, but that was about the time he sold the business. As I recall the new owner promptly eliminated that color.

Brian,

It was a paint he mixed. While it was a purple, it was leaning more towards the red.

I just recalled something while I was typing this. When he began to sell them to the public, the color was distinctly different from the prototypes he gave his friends. The newer color was much lighter.

However, I do still own a somewhat unique squid plug. It was a mini reverse atom. It was a mini version  imitation of Bob Pond's original. Amber in color. Drawback, the dreaded screw eyes. I can post a photo if anyone's interested.

Salt n' Pepper Squid please.....with extra duck sauce.   Oh and don't forget the black vinegar sauce!   Thank you!

where's the best place to buy hogy lures at?

Most tackle shops carry their stuff but usually not the colors or sizes I want so I usually just order directly from Hogys website.
