9' GSB 108 - 1M Guide Layout Help

Hi All,

I'm new to this forum and in need of some help. I've built a few light tackle saltwater rods and a couple of fly rods years ago, but I'm new to surf rod building, and I'm about to start a 9' GSB 1M. From my research the Fuji RV is the way to go. I'm hard pressed to find any solid resources specifically for surf rods. All the materials I've found are not designed for surf rods. (i.e Anglers Resources KR GPS). I have been using Dale Clemens book as a guide but the book is outdated on guide tech. I'm not clear on three things for surf rods:

1) Distance from spool tip to the first stripper/butt guide: some factory rods range from 30-36" is this all trial and error?

2) Ring size: for KR do I go 20 or 25 for surf rods? The rod will be paired with a Van Staal VR 125/150 and 30 # braid. It seems that 25 is the best bet.

3) Choke guides after the RV butt? Do you go with KWs and use KTs as runners? Are single foots runners acceptable? Most factory rods I see go with double foot KWs for the entire rod including the runners. Is it all preference?

Thanks for your help!

youre gonna want the rv25,rv16 then the tkwtg10m then tkwtg8's as runners 3 maybe 4. thats assuming you are stayimg with double foot guides the whole way. for that blank that would be fine, the single foot are lighter but the titanium double foot are plenty light to and the blank has some backbone to it.  i am guessing the reels have spool dia the same as or smaller than the vs150. if that is the case i would start my test casting with the rv25 around 28 inches from the extended spool.

Thanks SurfisherMike! Are there any downsides to using single-foot  KT runners over the double foot KWs? What if I I wanted to use the standard KW Stripper instead of the RV set up? Would you go KW 30, 20 , 12/16  then 3-4 KW or KT 8 runners? Thanks for your insight!

only down side of single foot guides on that blank is durability and thats from an abuse stand point not fishing performance.

i would prefer the RV's for the guide height to ring size ratio, will make for a smoother and quieter like flow. you can build it with K's but the 30 is a larger ring than you need for those reels, and the 25 wouldnt be tall enough. as far as going 30,25 with the k's you can only do that if you us the 30L. the regular 30 is a high frame guide and going from that to the 20 is a little choppy you would want to have a 25 next. the RV guides are killer, they only come in titanium frames so they arent cheap but there is nothing you wont like about that setup when is done.

Thanks again. So to recap

1) RV with single foot runners would be: RV25 - RV16 - KT10 , then 3-4 KT8 runners ?

2) RV with double footed runners would be: RV 25 - RV 16 - KW10, 3-4 KW8 runners

3)  KW - KW30L - KW 20 - KW12 - 3-4 KW 8 runners or I could swap the KW runners for KT8?

Does that make sense?

Does that make sense?

1. RV25, RV16, KL12 to KT8's

2. RV25 RV16 KW10M to KT8's

3. KW30H KL20 KL12 to KT8's

3b. KW30H KW25 KW20 KW12 to KT8's

3c KW30H KW25 KL16 KT10 to KT8's

To my mind a KW30L has no place on that rod, I think you misunderstood Mike's suggestion - he meant that to follow a KW30 with a KW 20 means you should really start with the low 30.

Go mad, go RV25 as a stripper, you will not regret it.

On suggestions 1, 2 and 3B you could easily swap out the KT8's for KW8's

To add to the madness, I just laid out and test casted a 1201L with a KW 30 KL20 & KL12 bullseyed  then floated the KT8 choke. Set up KW30 -30" from VR 150. I would of used a KLH25 but I use a VS200 as a back up.  This layout smoked 30lb braid and 20 lb Fireline. I was surprised. I used the RC method to estimate the choke and floated to raise center to intersect top ring of KL12. I have a Lami Infinity w/KLH25 @24.5" for the VR150. Fishes well . Good luck with the build.

Thanks pbadad!

To further add to the madness. I have also have a GSB 108 1L. Would you still use the same  RV layouts as the 1M? Either of these?

1. RV25, RV16, KL12 to KT8's

2. RV25 RV16 KW10M to KT8's

Or would down size the stripper to the RV 20?
