AS strange as it might seem with a conventional if you are right handed the reel handle is on the right side and if you want to use it as a left hand you need to order it that way , but actually if you are left hand as I am I have found the handle on the right great, as my left hand would hold the rod and usually the hand you use the most is the strongest . I cast from my left side with a conventional and find that to be very normal and I use my right side to cast a spinning rod . Back in another time I often would cast the conventional off both sides equally well and to obtain equal wear and tare on my body would fish the conventional for awhile and then the spinning rod. That way when you are doing a lot of fishing, one shoulder , does not take all the abuse. This is something I recommend you learn how to do even with just a conventional or spinning outfit. Learning how to use both sides can keep you fishing longer if you hurt a shoulder or hand as you will use different shoulder and hand doing so.

The reason you see most Canal guys using spinning now is: braid. There's no distance penalty any longer---in fact, most modern spinning reels will outcast a conventional, using 50# braid..

Drag and gear train is another. Reels like a Saltiga Dogfight can hold more drag pressure than a Abu, and the gearing is bulletproof. It'll pull the guts out of any conventional that you'd use for the Canal, in a flat out tug of war.

My Saltiga 6000H was the best fishing reel I ever owned---not just the best spinning reel.

I know, I think of you every night.

That was the plan. ;)

I remember you when I take a sip of that fine Finnish vodka.
