My first one cost $3.00 in 1979 near Ft Bragg.    The guy had a yellow school bus  that he worked out of and he was busy.

I found out later that his nickname was Poison John........

I always tip my guy. The way I look at it is I may be paying a certain amount and hour but he isn't getting all that. It may be excessive, but I do it anyway.

When I got mine back in the early to mid '70's, it was very rare that you paid by the hour. Most had notebooks with artwork and a price attached. If you were getting something custom, they went roughly by size. The most I ever paid was $125 for a fairly large tat and it was custom.

Tip is always a good idea, especially if the artist is doing a custom design over multiple sessions. Doesn't have to be a lot, but the thought and effort is always appreciated. Most artists split their earnings 60/40 or 50/50 with the shop, so at the the end of the day a bit extra helps them out a lot. Also, check out a bunch of artists work and get references, it's gonna be on your body for the rest of your life, and in that world more often than not cheap isn't good, and good isn't cheap. I've got about 70 hours of worth of work on me, from big custom pieces to flash off the wall fwiw.
