Personally, I only buy tackle and lures from the bait shops.  I catch all of my bait.  50% of that is sand fleas.  Other 50% is a mix of finger mullet, shrimp and other small fish with my cast net.  First day there is always sand fleas.  Or casting metal.  Usually a little of both.

Love the sand fleas! I cast net for live bait but I have never netted anything big enough to cut into chunks and rarely get any quantity of shrimp so I like to support the local bait shops as well.

I too don't catch a lot of shrimp (get a lot more south of OBX).  I mostly get live finger mullet and small pinfish.  I'll usually buy fresh shrimp for a dinner, and cut into that bag for bait...  I am kind of skittish of eating the shrimp from the bait shop.  Probably fine, but just trust the seafood from the local markets more, and the fish seem to like it too. This is fishing in the summer.  The live mullet get takers, but don't seem to do all that well with cut bunker or mullet, besides rays or small sharks.  I'm not really after them though.

For me, the bait shops are for lures, weights, hooks if I need, gulps, fish bites, t-shirts and maybe bait if I am night fishing and don't have any from earlier.
