Handle/Reel seat removal w/ steam

I ran into this reel seal / handle removal video a while back.

Great method, compare to cutting w/ Dremel cutting wheel and pry method, I thought.

Has anyone tried this on U40 Rod Bond yet?

Well, since no one seem to done this on U40, I decided to give it a try...

To the point, I was able to get the cork handle and reel seat off but wouldn't recommend this method.

It took about 40 mins of steaming before I can start moving the reel seat and while I got them out I also noticed some deformation on the blank as well. This was fairly quickly corrected by doing a bit more steaming (~5 mins) on affected part, and letting the blank restore it's original shape.

Somewhat of an expected result as I knew carbon fibers on the rod is also epoxied together and baked in the oven.

Though, I am not too sure if this affected the strength of the blank or not.

Below is some pics I took showing the process...

I.d be more worried about the heat from the burner coming up the outside of the pot on the overhanging blank.

Wallpaper steamer.

Never follow the cookbook type instructions.;)
