Epoxy incompatability

I've been making a plug that turns out to need two piece construction (its thin, and warps about half the time if carved from a single piece of wood), and I glued it together and filled some holes with Devon 20 ton epoxy, then did the usual bake and seal with Etex. To my surprise, some areas didn't cure at all, and the whole plug stayed slightly sticky while other plugs sealed with the same batch of Etex hardened up just fine.

Figuring id have to strip the plug, I scrubbed it with alcohol, then mineral spirits, then acetone. After the solvents dried, most of the plug had a nice hard coat of Etex, but the areas that had been exposed to 20 ton were totally bare. Another lesson learned the hard way.
