Trump New Immigration Plan

Its a points based system the emphasizes skills and education to bring in more skilled people and move away from the family based system. It also has a physical barrier component. Why the hell didn't he use his head and propose this at the get go. It more than likely would have passed especially given the fact the GOP controlled the House and Senate when he first took office.

From what I've seen I like it. Unfortunately it's not going to pass as the train has already left the station.

Unfortunately it's not going to pass because Democrats want nothing to do with immigration reform beyond no restrictions, open borders and oppose Trump at every turn.

It's a common sense system.  The Dems will oppose it of course, because they benefit (vote wise) from pulling in millions of uneducated s-holers that will live on the economic plantation and vote "d" the rest of their lives.

As is his usual negotiating tactic, Trump proposes something outrageous, to set one end parameter of the deal, then comes to the center to make the deal.

Now, if the Democrats do not counter him with a reasonable compromise,  they look like the ones that want open borders, an untenable solution to the majority of Americans.

Trump is playing them like a fiddle.

He has stated he wants a merit based system for a long time, it is not new.

The big problem is still what to do with the failures?

Just like the fake asylum seekers - no, you're not being oppressed and if you were, why not seek asylum in Mexico back there?

OK?

But what do you do with them, grab them by the collar and toss em out the door?

He has mentioned merit based in the past, but never stuck to a consistent focus on merit based and it all got lost in the noise. If he could just stay on message and emphasize merit based, elimination of family based chain migration and diversity lotteries and emphasize that the better system is merit based it may sell. Its really very close the Canadian system the one that all those who wanted to flee to Canada when Trump got elected discovered they couldn't just pack up and relocate to Canada.

Trump would be in a much better position if he has some sort of immigration reform under his belt to go along with his tax cut and roaring economy. I'm not sure how long this roaring economy will last.

I'm a proponent of merit based immigration. Good move on Trump's part if he can get it done. Spouses and minor children should be the only chain immigration allowed.

Agreed...but it will be spun as hateful and dangerous

maybe if he pushed for a comprehensive plan instead of just focusing on hateful issues that will fire up a racist base,

he wouldn't get that reaction.
