My theory is a large bass isn't going to pass up a nice meal.  Sure, they won't only hit large plugs, but given the actual size of bunker and mackerel, I don't think even the bigger plugs are actually big enough, and certainly aren't too big.

you are dead on point!

Guys line up to buy these trollers.  At 10” plus.   If they didn’t work they wouldn’t sell.   I use big plugs a lot.   Even schoolies hit them.

back when I was contemplating making my own,I was looking for plugs like Gary's.

what I was seeing were small and what I would use for LMB.

I started building[4 pieces]was successful with them and that's was the end of my search.

Gary's large catch and thats no lie.

that fish could have swallowed that bunker,,it may have had the tail in it's throat for a spell but,it def could eat it.

nice catch,,,

Here are a few of my larger plugs that I either have fished or plan to fish this season:

Pair of Lupo trollers at 4 1/4 oz.

Gibbs GTS (4 oz) and LIFISHINVT mack troller (3 1/4 oz)

Rainbow Lupo troller (3 3/4 oz) and Gibbs Danny (3.5 oz)IMG_1090.JPG.4de6fcf01ef264dabbb994792e7e7376.JPG

Unknown primitive mack swimmer with extra-bushy tail (3 1/4 oz) and Hanceck (sp?) long Conrad (4 oz)

Pair of L. Cooper trollers (3.5 oz)

Copper/bone repainted Sr. WaveJammer spook (3 1/4 oz) and Chef Chris slopehead (4.5 oz)

Chef Chris "Cuttyhunk Killer" needle (3 oz) and Gibbs pencil (3 1/4 oz)

My takeaway is that not all larger plugs weigh a ton, and old-school builders were in no way shy about using BIG-AZZ hooks (some of these are 5/0 and 6/0!).

They have been making large plugs since the beginning.  Here is one from the early days.  Most I find from the 40’s & 50’s average 7” plus and around 4oz. And larger hooks than most modern maker uses.  And they caught back then too.

all nice choices SCP,I'd take your bag out any night at all.

love the goo-goos' and the pea green/yella fella along with the LI-fish troller.

could get some solid action with those.

I'm gonna do up some in that pea-green combo.

I have just one I did up in that color and it is a killer too.

love the long, thin swimmers too, they can be hammer smashing plugs at times.

on any given night when it's "that" time of season,,,

Thx, HH.

When you come up to the Ditch, we will have to swap some plugs!

I recall one time on the W end of the ditch in '17 when I'd been fishing with a good mate starting at around 0200, with little to show for our efforts.  we futzed around here and there, but could only scrounge up a couple of low-20# fish each.

Finally we decided to head E around 0800.  I saw my budddy's (John of LIFISHINVT) SUV in the Herring Run lot, so we pulled in to say hello.

We shot the sheet about results for a minute or two, then he opened his large cooler to expose two fish that tipped the scales at over 75# in total.  We were gobsmacked!  (He had a comm license.)

He caught both of them on a large troller, which he was able to swim just outside the lip.  Told us that he was getting hits deep, but jigs were getting hung up, so he used the shape of the troller to get deep, and its buoyancy to rise just above the rocks.

Big wood worked for him that day!

It is amazing how many bigger fish I catch in the fall when everyone is catching schoolies. Some days I just tie on the biggest plug in my bag and start throwing it. I may not have a 30 fish day with it, but the 3 or 4 I do catch are usually nice. I don't need to catch 30 schoolies anymore, but it wasn't to long ago that I did. Now, I would rather try to fool a big girl.

Very well put. That’s my exact reasoning when I throw my biggest plugs. I try to weed out the smaller fish and only get the big hits. Even if others get 50+ fish and I only get 1 all night. The quality of the fish makes it worth it. It’s the hunt and waiting to feel that huge hit that makes it exciting

Do you feel there's always large fish around in a school either below or waiting for a large meal?

I would hate to miss out on any fish because i had too large a bait on.

In the fall when there was nonstop schoolie action is when I'm wondering if a large profile would cull these smaller fish?

It’s real really a game of chance. You have to take the leap of faith. Sometimes you win sometimes you lose. The thought of possibly catching a quality fish out of dinks is a good reason to risk action for quality imo.
