Adding a Hook-Keeper ring to my Fly Rod -- Sage Motive

I have a Sage Motive 9 Wt I bought off a member of this forum. It's been an awesome rod but it does not have one of those metal hook rings near the butt to keep your hook on. Is there a way to add one? I am decently handy and into DIY projects.

Thanks everyone.

Actually there is a fly hook keeper already. It kind of goes unnoticed.

You have to look for it. When you find it, you say, Gee! I didn't know that?

Look on your forward reel seat housing. There is a couple of grooves cut out on each side of the forward seat at the cork.

What nice about this idea is your fly gets covered by the reel cover when not in use.

i would advise against this on a saltwater rod.  the best way is to loop your line around the reel and hook it onto the first or second line guide.  This keeps more line out and your leader stretched.  as you get better you will find the hook keeper can become another thing your line can catch on when you shoot a long cast.

Those things are a sure fire way to get a hook in your hand. Take the advise of the guys above.

There's never any tension on the line when you do it.

Never seen it happen with any of my clients over a 21 year period. Tell me how?

Hook keepers just in front of handle are a pain. Mostly they are too small.

worse your thumb can catch on them when casting, On a factory rod that has them first thing I do is take them off.

If using guide place hook in frame not ceramic centre.

Easy way to make a hook keeper is to get a elastic band about 1/8 inch wide and wrap it around the pole.  pull one end through and you get a loop. pull it a little more so its tight and doesn't fall off. an there you go hook the end and it even stretches a lilt.

place it up a little on the rod so you don't hook your hand.

I use neoprene "O" rings on y rods.

Get one that you have to stretch over the fighting butt.  It stays there permantely.

Install the reel forward of the ring.

Then just hook the fly over the "O" ring and tension the line.

Looks like my rod has hidden hook keepers in the bottom of the top cork grip near the reel insert. I have not taken the fly rod out for the season yet to check it out but this looks like it will work just fine. Thanks for the heads up on this hidden feature.

This is the one pictured in this thread on one of my salt rods. I got it at Bass Pro.

Is that upside down?
