Jigging from Boat: How To Identify Good Spot to Jig?

Last year I focused on live lining and fly fishing. This year, I want to learn how to fish deeper in the water column and was thinking of doing some jigging. This would also something to do in the hottest times of summer when the fish are deeper in cooler and more oxigen rich water (or so I read...).

I have a small small boat with a fishfinder/depth reader. How should I use this tool (and others) to locate good places to jig for striped bass? Am I looking for drop offs, structure, current rips? My area is not very deep — 100 feet max

Also, does a real jigging rod help? I was planning on just using my 7’ MH Inshore rod.
