If you re shingle , you want to use whats on the house now. if Reds, stay with reds.

Don't mix.   and don't use the cheaper grade with knots.

Reds don't shrink like the Whites do.

Use Whites, to get that Silver Gray, Cape Cod look  . stain them.  don't paint them.

I like the Transparent stains.  i don't like the semi solids, they can peel.

They way we did them was to use Cabot's Bleaching oil 1 gal, and  Cabot's Silver Gray Oil base Transparent stain and mix them together. ( 2 gals )  What it does is it gives you a little gray to start and then 6 months later the bleach kicks in.  The second time you stain them ,  ( 5yrs. later ) you just have to use the bleaching oil.

Also make sure you keep stirring the stain in the bucket when applying. Otherwise you will end up with all the settlement in the bottom of the bucket and the Gray will will come out grayer in that section.  won't look even.

The reason you see black ,like under a window on some bay windows is because they didn't use the bleaching oil or most likely didn't stain them at all. They didn't get enough sun on them and they get mildew .  They do turn on there own, but they look and stay much better with the oil.   Whites will shrink and you will see spaces between them.

Red cedar shingles will bleed with light colors when using Transparent stains. After a while you will see the bleeding under the butts.  hope this helps.
