Daiwa BG Spare Parts

Last June I ordered 2 BG spools from Daiwa's Parts Department in California and they were placed on back order.   After calling them 3 more times and finding them still not available, I canceled them out last week.  Thats 9 months. The latest BG is a nice reel but after being out for a few years, you would think spare parts would be readily available. Has this availabilty extended to BG parts in general ?

I think this extends to Daiwa in general.

I called looking for a spare saltiga star drag handle and they are on back order. They have no idea when they will be available and told me it could be up to a year. I called around some authorized service/parts dealers for them. None available.

I honestly think it's done on purpose. I think they want to keep the parts at a minimum and funnel all the service requests to them.

My new BG3500 blew out after albie season last fall. Still under warranty. Took it to my local B&T shop who sells/services Daiwa and from whom I bought it,  for repair. It sat there on his table for five months with parts not available, all of November and December, Jan/February. I phoned Daiwa myself twice and was told the parts weren't available due to "inventory" which was to be finished the first week of Jan/2019. She assured me my shop would have the parts by the third week of January. Nope. He said he called Daiwa with the same results as I. In March, the 5 mo. mark, I phoned Daiwa again and finally got the "specialist", Chris. He checked and said they had gone over to a new "system" and didn't see my order for parts from my shop but did see a handle assembly order from him. He promised to have the parts shipped out the same day and in 7 days, my shop had them and fixed my reel. All in all, it took five full months for two measly parts.

While I was impressed with the reel, I would not consider purchasing another Daiwa reel due to the lack of repair parts and pretty much the "non concern" of their customer service. You would think after introducing the new BG series, Daiwa would have a supply of repair parts on hand but it was not to be. I told them, according to their warranty, they should either repair or replace the reel and at the five month mark, I felt I was due a new reel. They were not agreeable to this and it was then that I was transferred to the "specialist".

I've always been happy with our Penn reels plus the excellent customer service from Penn as well as help from the Penn rep here on SOL and am sorry I was tempted by my B&T to purchase the new BG3500. He uses his on his boat. I use mine from shore. Maybe that's the reason it needed repairs, who knows. But, I can say, my Daiwa on his table was not the only one sitting there awaiting parts. Several, he said, were waiting for handle repair parts. Not good IMO. Staying with Penn from now on.

I actually just ordered a Saltist spool from them. Took 5 minutes over the phone. Was super quick and simple, and I believe she said they had it in stock. Now y'all have me wondering if it's not gonna come...

Well, based on my experience above plus others, you'll probably get the spool eventually but I sympathize with you should your reel ever need a repair.

BTW, the "specialist" I referred to above told me it would be much better to return a reel needing repair directly to Daiwa as he said, like Penn, when I mentioned Penn, they also have a week's turnaround to the customer, which I doubt since they don't seem to have parts, but that's what he said.

It's really terrible that a large company like Daiwa would tell you it could be up to a year to get parts.

If I had known about all of this stuff, I never would have bought a Daiwa and never will again.

Again,

I think this is in terms of the parts business.

I do think they have the stock (and probably are required to) for warranty purposes. Otherwise they need to replace equipment with new equipment if they don't have the parts.

So I wouldn't stop buying Daiwa because they make great products.

Not true. They didn't have the parts for the BG series when they introduced it and still didn't have the parts a year later.

And, no, when I suggested that they replace my reel because they didn't have parts to fix it, they said they'd be available in 3 months and, even then, I had to call them again to get the parts shipped to my tackle shop. No way would they go along with the "repair or replace" clause in their warranty.

And, no, I don't feel Daiwa makes great products. My reel broke down after 6 weeks of albie fishing. Now, even though it's been repaired,I won't have an opportunity to test out the repair until I really get back into fishing which won't be until June or so and the warranty is over. If it breaks down again, for the $125 I paid for it @ my local tackle shop - $99 on AMZ, I won't even bother to have it repaired after this awful experience. I'll just give it to my tackle shop to use for parts and buy a Penn.

If I can't purchase parts for my fishing reels then the reel becomes a disposable product and then the price of the product becomes one of the factors to take into consideration when you want to purchase a reel...

I do feel my BG is a disposable product and, at the price, when I was considering buying it at the tackle shop, that's exactly what we discussed, the owner and I.
