Ferrule wraps

Are ferrule wraps necessary?

Found a thread from 2012, consensus was YES! Anything change?

Would the main reason be to protect that area from damage or is that an area that requires reinforcement?

Some blank manufacturers state that wrapping their ferruled rods are not necessary, while other say to wrap the ferrules.  I always wrap them with size A thread and give them two thin coats of finish.  It's insurance.

I've done it but admittedly for no reason other than 'that's what's typically done'. It doesn't make a hell of a lot of sense, probably isn't very smart but that's the reason.

My best thoughts on the topic though - if the blank is going to oval/deform and ultimately fail at the ferrule I somehow doubt that some thread and apoxee will prevent that from happening.

But still, I just put wraps on the ferrule of a multiple piece rod....

Freakin genius!

I actually broke a ferrule once: it was on 10-weight fly rod I'd built from a cheap two-piece blank, and I tried to muscle a cast, and the damn thing snapped right at the ferrule.

That ferrule was not wrapped. Ever since, I've always wrapped ferrules. Is it necessary in every case? Probably not, but rather than dealing with the hassle of keeping track of when it is an is not required, I just wrap 'em all.

I have seem more than one occasions that carbon fibers peels from the joint area of the blank. Could be shipping or banging into other stuff.  Migh be cosmetic damages, but why take the chance. I am worry outside damages from banging around.
