Used to catch them along with snappers in late summer as a kid. Was fairly common but that was 100 years ago almost forgot about them

BNickW
We catch banded rudderfish fairly regularly in July and August in Rhode Island. Cast a small tin at a buoy. Usually one hanging underneath.

More than likely a banded rudderfish (they look very similar and get mistaken for each other all the time), but theres no doubt in my mind that there are some pilotfish around from time to time. baldadonis2002
Pulled in a few rudders from Jones Pier this past summer in early August when the snappers were tiny. Used the snappers as bait, hooked a snapper through the back and tossed it back in under the pier Caught

Crackers
Most of the fish caught that look like pilot fish are actually banded rudder fish. There is still a few pilot fish that make their way up north.
Bluefishmaster
I have caught banded rudderfish and pilotfish in the tri-state area. They are mixed with the snapper blues. I caught a small red snapper in Brooklyn after a stormy week. You will never know what storms can bring with them up north. Making the world safe for bait, one bluefish at a time!
