Two rods for NorCal coast?

Hey fellas, do you carry a second rod with you when fishing the beach?

Or do you carry just one?

Been thinking of a second rod for bait/sandcrabs using a pyramid sinker and the other for artificial.

And if you do carry a second rod, do you carry on your pack or other?

Thinking being more mobile and fish more of the beach rather than just camping out in one spot.

Thanks!

I carry 1 rod for any given beach trip. If targeting perch I bring that gear. If targeting bass I bring that gear. I am always take the more mobile approach.

Thx Sal!

Trying to fight the urge for more gear this year but often wonder if I am missing out if I dont have what I need.

Tournament bass fishing created this tackle-hoe that I am now...LOL!

I usually take two rods with me and leave one in the car. My first is a 9” Phenix that’s for lures of up to an ounce or ounce and a quarter. My other rod is a 10’6” fiberstar I use when I think the fish will go after a bigger profile or I want more distance.

I’ll be carrying 1, a 9’4 Lamiglas Redline 10-20lbs paired with a Stradic CI4 4000.  Hoping it’ll be light enough for for fun action with the perch but my main goal is stripers. Mid summer I’ll switch over to 11ft TFO GIS paired with Twin Power 5000 SW for the bigger stripers.  Fall I’ll switch over to 9’6 Tsunami Airwave Elite with Slammer 3 5500 for the really big ones.

Atleast that’s the plan hahah

I’m new to surf fishing.

I like the mobile approach. With both perch and stripers, it can take lots of wandering to find them on any given day. And the last thing I want to do is stand there next to my rod and watch for a nibble. Usually I keep 2-3 rods in my car but only hike to the beach with one of them. Favorite is my Riversider Steelhead combo: 10' light action rod and 2500 size spin reel. I also have a bigger spin rig and a fly rig as well, in the car. Sometimes I will return to the car and change it up, but usually I stick to my choice, which is based on the tide and size of the swell. I don't carry a bucket, just a sling pack and a canvas bag for fish if I keep any.

It’s nice to have a 2nd rod say if you had the day off work and the weather is good all day and you drove all the way to the beach, got all suited up, tie your rig then broke your rod in half high sticking it checking the drag!! Then have to drive home to get your other:( I still only bring one because I’m to scared someone will steal one if I left it in the truck

I started carrying two rods this year. One for a 10'6 lamiglas crossover for perch and stripers, the other a heavier St. Croix for bigger surf and specifically for stripers. I use a Cabelas backpack that has a rod holder (a velcro slit in a pocket with a higher clip to retain it to the pack) and absolutely love it. Do I need to do this? No. But it gives me more options and is useful if there's a change in conditions, the targeted species, or if annoying gear problems happen so you can switch to the other quickly.
