Crabbing around the SF area

Hello all,

First time poster, long time reader.  I'm interested in getting into crab snaring from the shore (pier scene isn't my thing) around the San Francisco and San Mateo coast.  It looks like there are weighted and unweighted crab snares.  Which one is better?  How much weight will I need?  What type of rod do you recommend?  Currently I have a surf perch rod, Okuma Rockaway 10' 1/2 - 2, which is under-powered for the weight of crab snares.  Thanks!

Which is better ? The one that you can get to the bottom. How much weight will you need. That will depend on the surf conditions  ie: 1 foot at 15 sec or 10 feet at 8 seconds. Refer to Which is better above.

10 to 11 foot rod rated 2 to 5 or so.

I know guys that throw 8+oz on the beaches. I just casted 5-6 oz last weekend on a 4ft swell. I have 12+ft rods rated 8oz MH Fiblink and Team Daiwa 16oz H rods. I would recommend a Beef stick, Sealine or Ugly Stik paired with a 6k or 8k reel.
