flies-n-plugs
So I picked up a nicely built old school rod at an estate sale. The rod is 8’, honey colored, and has no markings whatsoever. 7 wire guides plus tip, cork tape, no seat. Looks like butt diameter is .88, and can’t get an accurate tip diameter because of the tip top. The first guide is like a 65. My first thought was to strip the guides and rebuild with a modern layout, but I’m a little torn. What would you do??
Uncle Joe
Whatever you do take care of that blank....I will bet that is a 70's era lamiglas blank. I am still fishing several that my dad wrapped in the early 70's and I rebuilt recently. Awesome blanks.
TimS
It could be one of many different honey blanks...it looks very Lamiglas, but they made many that it could be. Many builders cut blanks from the top...or bottom...or both It looks like it has barely been used since it was wrapped - I'd use it The time and effort to strip and re-wrap it would be enormous...fish with it, see if you like it TimS charles s, RonG and Uncle Joe 3 Show someone how to catch striped bass and they'll be ready to fish anywhere. Show someone where to go striped bass fishing and you'll have a desperate report chaser with loose lips.
flies-n-plugs
Yeah, the more I thought about it, the more I want to keep it as is. Whoever built it did a very nice job-the wraps are really clean. It doesn’t look like it really saw much use at all, and once I wiped the barn dust off of it, it just got better looking. Feels like it will toss some lighter stuff well. Uncle Joe
Belmo
8 feet long equals either jetty stick or trolling rod. Whichever the action and power seem better at. Either way, absolutely rebuild it. Terri Mae does not approve this message, but screw him.
ccb
The glass looks to light to be a Lamiglas Honey. looks like a Fenwick or an Eagle Claw but it cold be just the way the light hit it? The oldest ones where a little lighter then the ones in the 70's I call them dark honeys? Edited December 3, 2018 by ccb
flies-n-plugs
Yeah, the kitchen lights definitely made it look way lighter in the pictures than it is. In one list, I thought I found specs on a mb 96 3e that had a butt diameter of .88, but like Tim said, could have been cut from anything.
flies-n-plugs
Getting my winter builds lined up. Bought 3 blanks from North Fork Composites for short $. A sw764-1, hs821-1, and a mb795-1 for a total of $105!! Gonna throw a reel on this honey this morning and an assortment of plugs to see how it behaves. I think that’ll be the deciding factor. SurffisherMike
if you plan on fish braid with that rod you should consider a rebuild, doesnt have to be to complicated if its not for a customer. those guides aint gonna do you any favors if you fish them with braid
flies-n-plugs
Well, went down to the river and tossed an assortment of plugs....❤️! It threw a 16A bomber well, a 2 oz pencil great, and totally launched a 2 3/8 SS littleneck!!! It worked the pencil like a dream. Heaviest I threw was a 3 oz savage eel, and it was maxed out there. Wouldn’t say it totally punked out, but i wouldn’t really lay into a cast with 3. This made my decision easy-stripping this baby down and building with a modern layout! Love the action on this blank, and think that a modern layout will lighten it up a bit too.
SurffisherMike
cool. Consider single guides , a double foot guide for the stripper than all singles works well to. Dont put on underwraps and keep the wraps shorter. this will all keep that tip lighter and more responsive. I have built a bunch of glass rods like that. That plus braid line and these rods are a whole new deal.
flies-n-plugs
That’s where I was going with this one-can’t wait to see what it feels like with all of those giant wire guides and super long under wraps off of it
flies-n-plugs
So I just finished stripping this rod down and as I hoped, under the cork tape was a painted label!
flies-n-plugs
Now, what’s the best way to clean up the epoxy residue leftover from the wraps???
ccb
You can use lacquer thinner on a rag be careful? Don’t hit the label with lacquer thinner It will remove it ? Thats a nice rod. Edited January 3, 2019 by ccb
