The only problem with older Penn's with the exception of the 704/706 is the availability of parts. Some of the parts are hard to come by.

However if cared for they last for ever.

Still in general penn has much more part availability for its older models than say shimano or diawa.

That's putting it mildly

10 year old shimano parts are like hen's teeth and savagely expensive

I saw penn's own website had SSV3500's and SSv4500's for sale at $70.

I was real happy when i got them for $89 last month........

was looking for a spare spool, but an entire reel for the prie of 2 spools.........

I did end up getting the Spinfisher v4500 and Prevail 9' (3/4-3oz lures)...for tossing lures.

And got the old 710z for my old 7' rod (1-6oz lures) for casting weighted bait.

I'm figuring that between these two, i should be good enough. :)

I think your penn modern setup will be perfect. Don’t have any experience with classics but they seem to carry a solid reputation.

As as far as caring for the gear, it’s easy to give a quick rinse right before putting it in your van. Just keep a dedicated water bottle in you van. Rinse after each use, fill up the bottle, and repeat. That’s what I do. If you want to get fancy, they sell things like the RinseKit. I just use a gallon water bottle.

Rather than buying the lower quality reels every couple years invest in a VS, You can get a great deal on a used one in the forums if you keep an eye out and you’ll basically only be paying double what you would for the other reels but get a product that will last a lifetime if it’s maintained.

The 710z is getting loaded with 14# mono (for the boy to toss sand crabs into the wash) and i've no idea how much i'm winding on. Assuming it should stop before the spool "flares"?

And, does this amount and line lay look good 'nuff?

Hmm...there is a "dot" on the spool, awfully close to the outer edge of the line...about 1/16" away, so i reeled on a bit more. About right?
