The key here in north central is ponds are finally locked up.

Once the entire surface freezes, wind no longer hurts. Now we make ice.

Our next enemy is snow.

I like a bit of thickness of the ice before snow weights it down and slows freezing.

What are your predictions for a snow storm this weekend?  Sounds like Saturday night into Sunday.  I’m supposed to be flying to Florida early Sunday morning and thinking about changing our flight to Saturday morning to get out before it hits.

Of note: that 0° line at 850mb(5000ft) is very far north.

Here it is again at 925mb(2500ft)

Would make snow in SNE harder to come by. The early "look" here along 95 corridor appears milder with this storm, with much heavier odds for cold and snowfall in the mountains.

2nd point/takeaway: shallower cold field at 925mb vs 850 shows a nose of warmth aloft, with shallower cold present along inlandMA. Recipe for ice.

That's all I got at this range. Will have better take mid-week.

I’ve been checking a little pond in Plymouth so we can play some pond hockey.  It’s up to 2.5” as of yesterday morning, and was locked up on Friday.  With a little luck, the kids can start playing on day later this week- I told them nothing under 4” even though it’s super shallow. It isn’t worth getting hurt over...

Gas up your augers, SNE. It's happening this year. February is your jam.

2) as for the wknd storm... looks like yet another inland cutter. Means we're on the warm side. Cape may reach 50 or even 60°

Arctic blast behind storm.

Coldest air of year. Ice building weather.

Storm update:

NWS is pretty bullish on totals for Massachusetts.

I think there will be more sleet so these snow numbers seem a little high to me. I prefer a band of 8-12" where they have 12-18" along the Springfield to Lawrence corridor.

The general idea:

ezgif-4-5f8c542f8fcd.gif.8fdaf3861a1e10a86f882dc645f91fa9.gif

Jackpot north of NH border and in mtns with 12-18", as mixing of hvy sleet stops roughly at the NH line

Boston 4-8" + sleet city

And anything that falls freezes into a rock Sunday night, with 0° temps near dawn on Monday.. ....+wind.

My friends up in NB are expecting 3 feet on Sunday (93cm actually) and then another couple feet next week.

But they've been ice fishing for a while now :(

Our time will come for local SNE waters, I guarantee it. 1-2weeks and we should be good

Anyone fishing the Brookfield Lions club derby next weekend?

I rarely catch much I must admit, but it's a chance to catch a pike, win an ATV and/or at least get my entry fee back in the drawing :)

THough my chances of pike or ATV are about the same. :thumbd:
