When do you hang up the waders for the year?

Bounced around a lot the past two days.

Yesterday was quiet with just a few birds here and there and some small bait in the rocks at an inlet.

Today there were HOURS of birds smashing something in huge surf. Out of surfcasting range and in a big break-rip combo that would have been very difficult/dangerous for those with a boat. Cormorants had full bellies, coming up with what were either sand eels or other small bait on every drop. Rough surf and a lot of flooding out there.

Couldn't buy a bite. I didn't see anyone hook up. Still a fair amount of fisherman out there.

Made me want to hang em up but I know I won't.

I may have seen you out there good luck!

Many anglers don't bother with schoolies or rats but if you lighten up your tackle and crush the barbs on your jigs there's still fun to be had in the surf. I'm down to a 9ftr. with a VS150 spooled with 14lb. Fireline and 30lb. leader. Have fun and enjoy life, you only got one so make it count....

In a way it's nicer to fish because we get to use some lighter equip. 9'6 airwave is one of my favorite rods to use. Barbs being crushed already bailed me out this fall when I hooked a bird wing (helpful with fish too :)). Good advice. Time to go take some rips!

Went to the beach for 2 hours early this morning. Shorts all over. Went back for a couple hours in the afternoon, the wind kicked up and they were still there. Some sand eels in the wash and some sand flea. No other fishermen either trip.

I hung up my waders tonight just to dry them off. They aren't going away just yet.

If there were still schoolies around in numbers where I fish, I wouldn't be quiting either.

Just drive 20 miles south

20 miles south ain’t an easy trip when you are way out east.

I know but you know it is worth.

No traffic going back

I was counting from Mattituck; for you may be few more miles.

Going to give the beach one last try this weekend. Anyone encounter any life on the south shore this week? I've heard there are still sand eels around.

Damn, last year I had some pretty consistent schoolie action into mid December, bit colder this year though. Will probably still give it a try, I’ll consider it a hike that I happen to have brought a surf rod on. Thanks for the reports guys.

These are some great responses. And it's really insightful to see what others think about. I've had some very good trips up until recently (even after the snow) but no sign of life the last 3 days while working a good amount of beach.

I love being out there as long as there's a chance at a fish. Hoping that those cold days didn't close the year for good. I did snag a sand flea today (which I found at least 20 in a stomach last week) so there's something for fish to eat but starting to think there may not be any fish to hold in an area. It's one of those times where I hope I'm wrong.

Just got back. Still there. More than micros.

Prolly got one more shot before I hang the waders.

But fishing ain't done. It's a 365 day season.  The skins will stay busy.

Might give it a shot tomorrow. Cold but little wind. Friday looks like a possibility also. I'm thinking Friday might be it but who knows.
