MA tax bill rec'd for 2014 taxes

My mother tells me she got a letter from the MA dept of revenue saying she owes them $319 (plus penalty and interest) for her taxes from 2014.

She keeps meticulous records, and went to her file and pulled out that year's taxes.

The bill doesn't specify anything other than that she didn't pay her taxes when she filed.

Problem is that she E-filed and was due (and received) a REFUND that year.

I told her to follow the instructions for disputing this claim, as she has all her paperwork.

Reminded me of my own bureaucratic crap-storm experience with the DMV some years back.

I was unable to get a state ID (I didn't drive at the time) because they claimed I had an unpaid excise tax bill.

Problem was I didn't drive, didn't have a car, so how could I get billed for a car I didn't own?

Seems the DMV in their infinite idiocy had transposed my SS number on the tax bill.

Took me 3 months to finally get it corrected by them, specifically when I told that since they claimed I owned the car I was going to look for it and take it back by force.

That made them change their attitude.....
