Which of you will help me help others at Christmas? (SOL Christmas Family Auction)

I am asking for your help, plain and simple.  Will you support this cause by making a donation to be auctioned off?  (Or donate $$ via PP or check?)

I'll be involved in this event again this year, because I was absolutely gob-smacked (that's one for you, Saxon!) by what I learned last year:

--Hundreds and hundreds of hours were spent by some great and selfless folks to help us help FOUR families.

--SOL members rose to the occasion in fine form to both donate and bid (no surprise there!)

--But, THE biggest thing for me (which I truly did not anticipate) was my emotional response when I saw the faces of those kids, and their parents, at Christmas.  I cried like a baby.

You all expect that the children got gifts of toys and clothing, but that's only part of the story.

Gift cards for food, past-due utility bills paid, heck even a night out for Mom and Dad (including babysitting) after their family had been through a very rough patch.  (Honestly, *how* thoughtful was that?????  It wasn't fancy food--might have been Olive Garden, but don't hold me to that--but it was a long-overdue break for dinner and a movie for parents who deserved it.

100% of $$ raised goes directly to helping families that deserve some help.

I'll be posting details in the next few days, but for now I am asking you to consider helping out.  Its not just plugs (although *some* of us  plugs).  Books, knives, rods, reels, old advertisements, line, tins, events (Todd's shad fishing on the CT River was a huge hit last year!), artwork, displays, and on and on it goes.

I already know of SOL folks who would love to bid on eel-skin jigs and tins.  (Maybe some of you could find some in your cellars or closets?)

I'm certain that AH plugs would be well-received.  :stick:

As would some cool needles

Bike maintenance/tune-up class?

Unique striper flies and/or tying lessons?

Escorting/guiding two or four folks for sight-fishing?

Some unique Ditch Trolls items?

I'll leave it to your fertile imaginations.

Just to tease some of you, I already have donation commitments from builders including JigMan, Lonell, Pete, Kphresh, and many others.

As always, thank you for listening, and THANK YOU for considering.

Tight lines to all,

P

As I'm considering what I will donate (in addition to the commitments that I've already made), I'd like your thoughts on:

Freshwater fly assortments--could be focused on LMB, SMB, trout/salmon, or even by type of water

Cooking lesson--could be by technique, such as sautees, braises, roasts, stews, etc.  Seems like a focus on preparing fish would be appropriate?

"How to pair wines with XX"--XX could be various types of fish or game.  (And, yes, you *can* enjoy red wine with fish!!)

I'm just thinking out loud.

Thanks for starting up the Family auction again this year Phil.   I'm sure our fellow SOL "characters" will join hands and help to brighten the hopes of those less fortunate.

I have an idea or two brewing for donations and also look forward to over-bidding someone, at the last second, to win another one of a kind plug!! :rav:

Listen buddy,  if you are donating any sort of culinary arts training.... I'm buying!!   Just sayin' :naughty:

Phil it might not be much, however I will try to support you and this good cause.

Thank you Carl for your offer to help.

With all due respect, Sir, what you consider "might not be much" might be priceless to a fellow angler!

For the record, I didn't "start it", although my impatience enthusiasm *might* have had something to do with kicking it off earlier than we've done in the past.  :wee:

Thanks Todd!

I know that fertile imagination of yours, so I've no doubt that you will come up with yet another unique offering for this year's auction!!!

As for Culinaria, I'm working on a few ideas...

Thanks for helping out guys!

Here's how it works:

You PM pic(s) and descriptions to me.  (no need to ship anything to me, as you will see below)

I'll post them in the auction.  Once the winner has paid for what he won in the auction, you will be notified of the winner's name and mailing address, at which time you will mail the item(s) that you donated to the winner.

Most folks who donate items mail them at their own expense.  If that's a problem, just LMK via PM and we can reimburse you (via PP) for shipping costs.

Thanks guys!

I'll start another thread here that specifically references how to donate, but since you've asked, I just posted the details about what we're doing and how to donate here:
