It's not unheard of for people to catch them, just unusual.

They are okay to eat (wouldn't eat one in red tide areas); a lot of people like to fry the row sacs. The row almost has a cornbread texture.

Not my favorite fish to eat, but I have had worse.

When I am in Florida I fish for the mullet quite a bit. The locals showed me how to use rolled oats, made into a wet mixture and squeeze onto a small hook. Can use a small sliver of a white grub, a real small sliver. Then throw a hand full of the rolled oats into the water near your bait. You tube has some video on the process. Some of the old timers do quite well with this system.

they actually sell weighted treble hooks  so you can snag them and use them for bait or to eat.... just cast it in front of the school and rip it thru them... you will end

up snagging one pretty quick (if done right)....great to use for cut bait.... plus it fresh and cheap...
