An acquaintance of mine said he was dead or close to it when pulled from the surf. A huge explosion of water, with a large tail could be seen.

Just because someone made an error in judgement doesn't mean they should be ridiculed on the internet by uncompassionate people.

Definition of uncompassionate. : devoid of feeling, sympathy, or compassion. an uncompassionatestatement/person/policy.

"Error of judgment?"

He simply went into the water. He was body surfing. He didn't try to hitch a ride on the shark, or pet it, or do any of the other idiotic things with sharks that people do.  I haven't seen anything to suggest that he should have known that a great white shark was in the vicinity.

All the fishermen here who have never waded into the water at night, raise your hands .... anyone? Anyone?

He was unlucky.  Nothing more then that. RIP.

It was only a matter of time before this came to happen. Protecting the seals has invited their only predator to our shores, literally.....

Very tragic and sad, but every time we engage in an activity, we are endangering ourselves. He died doing something he loved. It beats the hell out of living to 90 without ever taking risks in order to live life.

What do you propose we bring in for people? Dinosaurs, mass shooters?

It's a fact of life that nature of all sorts kill people in far greater numbers than a big demonised fish, spiders, snakes, jellyfish not forgetting cars, people(Crime), too much hamburgers?

Even man's best friend.

BrianBM not sure where you're actually from and it's generally irrelevant to the conversation but that portion of the Cape is filthy with Great Whites.   Most if not all those beaches have plenty of signs warning people of the dangers of shark encounters.   Yeah, it's an error in judgement.   Unlucky is walking out of your front door and getting hit by lighting.    Blowing off a warning sign of known shark infested waters is an error in judgement.

Tomorrow it will get real.   There will be a name  associated with this victim and his family will have to make arrangements for his funeral.

I feel bad for his family and friends.   RIP unknown shark victim.
