Sometime mid winter I told the Ms. that I needed a 'us and the dog' vacation this year and the message was well received.  I chose Hatteras sometime in sept or early oct and she found us a nice pet friendly place for labor day week.  We lucked out big time weather-wise and the pup loved it!  We found a really nice empty beach just north of Buxton and spent most of our days there.

Per the advice of @JaseB I elected to pitch a Skinner rig for flounder which was by far the most effective method of catching I found.  A jighead or bucktail and gulp! mullet or shrimp did very very well for the entire week, especially around sunrise and low tide.  I picked up around 30 flounder over the course of the week, about 5-7 of which were legal.  Since there was just the two of us I kept just one and made it into tacos and ceviche.  I also caught some very nice kingfish (whiting?) and a few baby pompano.  This trip was great and made up for the fact that I will likely miss the vast majority of the fall season in the mid-Atlantic due to the purchase of a house and all the work and $$ that will go along with it.

Nice, never caught a flounder in the obx before, gonna have to try it out next time!

A lot of them there. Find an overwash sandbar and cast into the gully and drag towards the ledge.

sounds like a good trip! In before the storm!
