Time to start paying attention to Florence?

116 posts in this topic

Despite the horrific rains, folks caught a break with the windspeed. Generally gusted to around a hundred in communities beneath the eyewall. Most structures built to hurricane code can take 100. Starts to get iffy 110..120... then real sketchy around 130,140. Major failures start happening.

Speaking of major structural failures....on the other side of the world a supertyphoon is about to make landfall. Gusting over 330 kph. Thats 205mph. EF4 tornado speed.

Im finding them way more informative and interesting than anything I’m reading in the news.. even sent a link to my 80 yr old mom to follow (she’s a weather nerd too)

The core of Florence now on the NC/SC border, wobbling WSW at 5mph and heading into Myrtle Beach.

Good news is that land interaction has degraded the core, and peak winds in that region are down to about 65 kts. I suspect Florence will be downgraded at the 5pm or 8pm advisory to a 65 or 70mph tropical storm, as the storm continues to weaken over land. Torrential rains continue though-- for another 2 days. Wilmington projected to stay under the bands through 6pm Sunday.

Denuded eyewall with 50-55kt winds now over South Myrtle Beach/Pauley Island, South Carolina

Rains and wind are heavy there...but not out of control. It is a doable situation.

Where it is out of control is back north near Cape Lookout/Morehead City. Where the bright yellow and red spiral bands have trained over the same spot for nearly 24hours.

Your reports are just awesome rst3, thank you! I have friends in NC, and have found these reports so helpful. I actually told him to look at the site, as your analysis is head and shoulders above any weather channel I’ve seen. I look forward to your next post!

My brother live in murrells.   After looking at all the data (he does stuff) he said it'd be OK to stay.  So far so good.

@55555s great news. your brother's in the clear.

hope all is well down his way.

Might catch some banding on the back side, but shouldn't be too too bad.
