Fluke Size Reg ?

45 posts in this topic

Not one to cry usually but does anyone agree that 19" is a bit excessive for fluke! had a stellar day out this last weekend with what would have been a two person limit in a few hours... 2 years ago that is! but nothing to bring home this trip, every fish was around 17" - 18.5" was a bit disheartening that one of my best days this year still didn't add up to a nice meal. for the record i am a avid c&r fisherman but sometimes its nice for porgy or the fish market to not be the only option. anyone feeling the same way or am i just not working hard enough??

You’ll reap the rewards of all those throwbacks next year, when they’re fat 23”ers ... well, that’s what I’ve been telling myself for the last few years ... but I think the trawler draggers are getting there first

:waah:

Thank God for porgies or my freezer would be empty!  Another no-keeper back bay trip for me Sunday. Very annoying to see the Skinner fluke porn vids of them bailing doormats at Montauk.

Ugh I know, I stopped watching them a month ago, wish he would get back to the kayak and surf videos.

I've caught 3 keeper fluke from the yak this year, and easily over 100 shorts, it is really tough to find the bigger fish this year close to home.

He got pissed when I said as much in a Youtube comment, and then defended himself by saying if you want to learn something watch some of his other videos!  He doesn't even bother to explain why those spots are so productive, picking the right spot seems to be 90% of fluking.

Current, cover and food. Big gravel with rocks strewn about with a decent current = big fluke area. Any place you are catching porgies = big fluke area. Near wrecks that are on gravel bottom = big fluke area.  Mussel beds = big fluke area.

It’s just the same video over and over, they must get the most views so he keeps pumping them out.

There are plenty of keepers in my area in the bays for about 2 weeks when the season opens .  In that short period of time the charter fleets manage to wipe out most of the keepers  .  A dozen boats in the fleet, 30 -40 passengers a day , 2 to 3 trips a day in a small area,  the fluke don’t stand a chance .  If my math is correct and the whole fleet limits out , that’s over 4,000 fluke that can be kept on a single day .   That’s insane !!!!

If I knew people with boats that would take me out to spots where I can limit out and get 8+ pounders nearly every trip, I wouldn't be doing kayak and surf videos either.

Dropoffs and sticky areas. He's mentioned it in some of the videos.
