I know this is an old post, I think that it is great you are comparing the two different generations. I see that you have one of the first VS300 reels. I am hoping you might help me to find pictures of some of the early VS300 reels with a solid rotor cup I build for a very special group of Surf fishermen, that purchased around 35 VS300 reels specially engraved by me personally with their names. Steve Campo at that time came to my shop in Fairfield to pickup all the reels I had engraved for guys like Guppy, Ben Russo, Stephen Weitzen and many more. I will post this question on a little later on the main forum also, it will be interesting to see how many I can find!

These are very nice reels and very pricey.

They are not even available on market.

Hopefully i will get to have 1.

They are very much available... call the shop and order a reel to your specifications.. or go on their website and use the order page to customize the perfect reel..

Hay Jed when ZeeBaas start putting the serial numbers inside the reels. I just got one new old stock along with a prototype Z surf bag both never used.

I’ll take em for asking :)

that is the second Z bag that has appeared on SOL. The other one sold. Your reel is an old second generation made in USA silver. They went to China before coming back stateside.

Ron Diconstanzo has one of those prototype zeebaas bags.

Why aren’t you fishing?

Currently I own 3 Generation 1 (1 ZX27 & 2 ZX22) and 4 Generation 2 (3 ZX2-27 & 1 ZX2-22)

My experience:

Spool & Drag

My primary fishing reel is a Generation 2 ZX2-27 Red/Silver.  This reel is beat to death, but is smooth and has a very reliable drag.  I am extremely confident putting the brakes to fish with this reel.  Although this is my confidence reel, I will say that my Generation 1 reels seems to have an even more smooth drag.  I can't give a mechanical explanation, they just feel even better than my beat up 27.

As noted above, the early Generation 1 reels have extremely smooth drags. Unfortunately, they suffer from a design flaw that allows sand/water to enter the drag from the top.  This was remedied by filling the holes with silicone or from an expensive upgrade.  Also worth noting, very early reels have a different design spool - the spool skirt is fixed to the spool body and the drag cap and titanium ring are slightly smaller in diameter (not interchangeable with current design)

Spool design then changed to eliminate the Titanium ring.  This has been replaced by a newer version of the first drag cap (without sand holes)

Best Spool and drag - Generation 2

Generation 1 Spool with 1 piece spool body and skirt (note 4 screw to access drag)

Blue spool skit is threaded on to access drag.  Black spool body has holes, but drag is protected

I need a lefty 22 spool cap..... any knowledge on how I go about getting one?

Hay D.B.85 I picked up a right hand crank rotor and spool here on SOL and the cap is threaded the same as my left hand crank. Both reels are 2nd gen. Getting a response from ZB is tough at the moment. Had them switch the rotor arm on the RH and I just sent it in after trying for two weeks to talk to them.

I wasnt sure weather or not the cap threads were the same or not, thanks for that info.  Yes, it's been an on-going issue getting through to them for me as well so the reel has been half dismantled shelf art the entire season.  Hoping to get this resolved when I contact them next.
