Left/Media Use “Banana Republic” With No Sense of History Nor Scale

The Media, Dems and fellow SOLers have told us that Trump would turn the USA into a banana republic. It is one of those throwaway lines that sounds smart but is usually uttered by people with no sense of history nor scale.

Venezuela and Haiti provide the most visible current examples of countries being called “banana republic”. One a failure of socialist rule, the other a perennially failing kleptocracy.

But few are focused on another large country failing down south, Argentina. I was last in Argentina in 2000, just before the 2001 breakdown. The country mounted a comeback but can’t sustain itself.

Point is, next time some says Trump is turning USA into a banana republic, ask them “Like Venezuela, Haiti or Argentina?”  See what happens.

Argentina's central bank hikes rates to 60% as the currency collapses

Sam Meredith

Argentina is struggling to cope with yet another financial crisis.

Investors are increasingly concerned Latin America's third-largest economy could soon default as it struggles to repay heavy government borrowing. This comes after Argentina's government unexpectedly asked for the early release of a $50 billion loan from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) on Wednesday.

The Argentine peso crashed to record lows on the news. It saw steep losses in the previous session and collapsed another 15 percent to hit 39 pesos against the U.S. dollar on Thursday morning.

The peso is down more than 45 percent against the greenback this year, exacerbating pre-existing fears over the country's weakening economy while inflation is running at 25.4 percent this year.

Hey I was in Buenos Aires around that time too. For about a month. Had an awesome time

I’m just sorry I didn’t get down to Patagonia for those monster sea run trout.

Re OP I’d have to go back to my post where I asked if Ivanka should wear fruit on her head.

I did not make it all the south, was up in Baraloche (sp?) area chasing river big browns. My wife sent me there as 40th birthday gift. Met me in BA where we spent a couple days. Great city, very European, circa 1920s feel.

I wonder how cheap fishing is down there now? Or, how dicey the security situation might be outside BA and off of the estancias

Honduras, Guatemala, Nicaragua, been to all three.  Unstable government and poor.  That's all it takes to be a Banana Republic..

On the positive side, you can get a stalk of nearly 200 bananas for a buck.

Buddy’s kid is down in Patagonia working on a ranch.  He’s been out for some big trout. Biggest security threat he mentioned was the 70kg puma they shot.   This was some months ago but it’s pretty removed from the rest of the world

Grilled meat there is first class. Wines were good with some of the Malbec reserves exceptional. That surprised me as an American would not think much of Malbec based on what was available, especially from Arg. Back in 2000, Chile was way ahead of Argentina in getting their better wines into the USA.

They are not in hiding.

Met one in Lima, Peru, upper management in Sherman Williams Paints.

He got pulled out of college and sent to tank school, on the way to his first tank, his jeep was strafed by a Spitfire and shot his leg off.  He and his entire family, wife and two sons, all spoke fluent Spanish, English,  and French.

Maybe he wasn't an "official Nazi"

Two guys from grad school I knew well started a company that developed GIS software, with utilities being their main marketing area. This was 1980, so they were early, and smoked it. Eventually they were purchased by Schlumberger, which is where they really got wealthy. About 20 yrs ago, around age 45, both of them bought ranches in Patagonia. Sweet.
