Why Do People Get Married?

More specifically, why do men get married? Like DG, the divorce thread got me to thinking how lucky I've been, but begs the question of why?

Seems to me, that maybe 80 years ago, many women wouldn't put out unless they thought there was something in it for them, like marriage to a guy that was going to take care of them. And there used to be a stigma attached to those living together out of wedlock. But those days are long gone, and getting laid is easy peesy, no need to swear to a lifetime of devotion for a piece of ass, no?

There's really no shame anymore in just shacking up without a bunch of legal ramifications. A couple can buy a house together, have two dogs and three kids without getting married. Most companies will extend health insurance benefits and other perks to partners. I'm trying really hard to think of a practical reason to get married.

What am I missing, why do guys continue to "make it legal"

My wife and I say all the time, there really isn't any reason for people to be married, including us. It does make it easier for people as far as legal stuff and benefits go.

Didn't matter to me. My wife is my best friend.

If free internet porn had come out a few years earlier, I would still be single.
