"Monkeyed" in Context

@BW posted this in the Florida Governor thread but it is worth its own post. Funny thing is, you all talked about this contemporaneously back in October 2016. Just use the Search bar for "monkeyed".

But here goes, hope you are ready for this. Wonder what Gillum will say when this sees the light of day?

Transcript:

[Question from the crowd] "I would just like to know what you can say to reassure us that this election will not be rigged or stolen?”

As the crowd cheered, Obama answered, “Well, I tell you what it helps in Ohio, that we got Democrats in charge of the machines.”

“But look, I come from Chicago,” Obama continued, “so I want to be honest, it’s not as if it’s just Republicans who have monkeyed around with elections in the past. Sometimes, Democrats have, too.”

Remind me, was Obama’s accused of being a self-hating black man and racist back then?

So please explain cognitive dissonance in this context? What two conflicting/contradictory concepts are in conflict?

I took monkeyed as spoken the same as F'ed with/up, screwed with etc. I've told my kids, especially my son as a teenager to "stop monkeying with that".  It takes a real racist to try and make something like that comment, in that context it was used, racist, but of course when racism is your favorite and most used card in your deck due to lack of a message...........I guess you gotta play your only ace.

We will have sense again when saying socialism will monkey up the works is not considered an “unfortunate turn of phrase”

You do know what “unfortunate” means, yes? Not malicious, insulting, belligerent etc.

Methinks this is part of the reason sense had left the building

Yes.  It was an appropriate comment by DeSantis.  There was nothing unfortunate about it

the only thing unfortunate is giving any credence to anyone who used it attack DeSantis’ character
