Anyone Use UK Style Tripod Rod Holders?

Does anyone here use UK style tripod rod holders? (As in the ones used in England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, Northern Ireland).  The ones I've seen online in the US seem to be cheap flimsy camera tripods that were slightly converted to fishing rod use.  The UK type tripods have 1-piece legs instead of telescoping ones.  Please let me know where you've seen or purchased the sturdier UK style tripod rod holders. (as seen in the photo I found online)

I have several types and sizes of traditional rod holders, but occasionally the New Jersey sand they're buried in becomes like quicksand and a decent sized fish could pull over the rod & rod holder at night before I realize it.  Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

I know what you mean, but I've never seen such a rod holder on this side of the Atlantic.  I'm not sure that they'd resist a strong pull, either.

If you're fishing a conventional reel with bait for what might be a big fish, why would you not use the clicker on the reel?

Just carry a hammer and slam that spike down good and deep.. I use schedule 80 1 1/4” ( might need 2” for some butt caps) and hammer that sucker in 6-10” them pull and remove sand ..the put back in hole and hammer the piss out of it .. i Fish tight drag on a fathom 12 with clicker on .. catch many big sharks that hit like freight trains and it’s always held tight ..

I thinks you would definitely be saying see ya to your combo running that Triod thingy .. them European guys running bait runners almost exclusively for carp and welsh ..

Yes, I am using a conventional reel with bait (bunker or mullet) and a 6 to 10 oz sinker on the beach.  The only reel I can get some distance with is an Akios 656 CTM (magnet) with 20 lb. mono.  Unfortunately, it's a very small reel, and even when I overfill it with mono, there is absolutely no line left on the reel after a decent cast.  I'm just now looking at the new Akios 757 CTM but I think it only holds 25 yards of mono more than the 656 CTM.  An additional issue is that when fishing at night, I normally use 3 surf rods at once and each rod is around 100 feet apart, so I need time to run to a rod after I realize it was hit.  (Also, at night with a breeze, I wouldn't even hear the clicker when I'm any distance from the rod).  My brother was fishing on the same beach at night a few months ago and one of his rods was missing - a large bluefish had pulled out his rod holder and dragged his rod way out into the ocean.  (He did go out into the ocean to look for it & found it and brought in the bluefish!)  I thought the tripod type rod holder might withstand a lot more pull in wet sand - especially if only a small part of the top of the rod was over the top of the tripod.  I noticed (on facebook) that the tripod type rod holders are used by all the UK casting teams when they're fishing.

Hello guy's and L.N58,  the type of tripod in your picture is very commonly used over this way. They also usually come with an adjustable bar similar to top rod v bar- but with rod butt holder cups, these are used so the rods/tips height  can be raised so as to avoid close -in breakers hitting line in certain venues, mostly these are not used and the rod butt is on the ground. The key to stability apart from the ability to splay and lock the legs is a hook which is fitted under spreader block at top of rod rest, from this you hang a heavy weight, I usually use a bag of sinkers or rocks - the heavier the better. The legs are also pushed into sand if on a beach, correctly set up they are stable...glider

Using a tripod will bring its own set of issues. I think they are popular over there because of the makeup of their beaches. Some are all stones, and they have concrete platforms and such. A spike just will not work. The tripod is used because they have to. On beaches they do not have to, it might be because they can keep their rods bunched close together, or they are just used to them.

An incoming tide is the one that is tricky. I have seen my spikes looking great, not realizing the sand has liquified, and then discover the smallest of stress has them flopping straight over. Now when the water approaches I move way up the beach.

Somewhere in my shed I have an Ian’s Gold tripod, minus pieces I’m sure. I did not care for it at all. It really didn’t offer me anything at all.

Have you considered dropping down to 15 lb test line ?

I figured it out, for the 3-rd rod, gonna lean it on the hand screws on the sides which tightenes the support bars..

It is going to be the closer and shalower rig - rod and the water wont pull so much.

Bumping this for any new ideas or info.

I have a unique situation specific to my health.

Hammerin spikes zaps my strength & energy.  With the concoction of meds I'm on, I just fall over from simple exhaustion. So I'm thinking of utilizing a tripod with a baitfeeder reel.

If anyone has any suggestions on halfway usable brands or models I'd love to hear em.

I use them. I have 4 or 5 in different sizes.

Smallest is a 3' , tallest is extendable to 4-7', i can configure it for dual or single head.

All the brands are roughly the same.  You can buy the connecting parts from the UK and it ships cheaper.  Then buy aluminum pieces locally, and cut it at home to size.

For usage though, trust me. It takes just as much effort to get the center leg into the sand compared to a regular spike. Its the same angle aluminum piece. I have to open the tripod, and wiggle it side to side, dig in the center leg at least 6"(Just like a single spike (>8"), no need to stupidly hammer it down). The 2 side legs dont matter as much as they just support center. They can sit on the sand or i can push them in an inch or three.

Try wiggling spikes or pvc tubes.  Usually 5-10 quick wiggles and it's at a good depth. Not much effort at all.

spend some time on the carp fishing sites. look up homemade rod pods etc. i have seen both homemade and very expensive commercial ones used. if the bait-feeder or clicker or loose drag etc is not used those type of setups will lead to disaster .

I was thinking of weighting the center spike down instead of digging it in.  The spots I fish arent all that sandy.

Dangle a bucket full of rocks off it.  Move it to the rear.

Did u make all of yours?   I'm looking at a Zebco brand one on Amazon.  6ft.

Eta.  So I just Googled how much a 5gal bucket of sand weighs.  70-80lbs.    1/4 filled is 20lbs

So my next though is not to suspend the bucket,  leave it on the ground, anchor the rear spike to the bucket.

Chances of me hookin a large shark in Western LIS are there. Slim. But there. I'd be using a baitfeeder or freespool anyways.

I get mine from the UK, i ordered them years ago though.

the zebco one will work. Theyre all roughly built the same. Screws and hard plastic joints hold it together.  For the amazon price thats not bad at all. Pretty cheap. Especially once you factor current market shipping prices.

Why dangle rocks... Youre already winded after setting it up, now your gonna move another 50lb of rocks? LOL.  Less effort to just wiggle the leg in a few inchs and sit the cooler on the back leg.

You guys apparently do not fish for bull Red Drum or have large sharks in the area your bait fishing... it would be somewhat comical to the bystander, not the rod owner.
