· #1 Posted August 15, 2018 Hi. im in avid fisherman here in NJ. Never owned conventional gear.About 15 years ago My grandfather gave me an old setup from the 70’s I would assume that he had on his old boat. He had an old penn Jigmaster on it. Im attaching pictures of the rod he gave me. He’s getting older so I thought it would be cool if I had the rod reconditioned, and the reel beefed up and brought him fishing with it at the inlet. I just can’t identify the rod because I don’t see any markings. I’ve never seen a teak or hardwood (whatever it is) handle. So it can’t be that common. any help is greatly approciated! 0 Go to top

· #3 Posted August 17, 2018 (edited) Based on the colors, it might be a Penn rod. It is a "boat rod" at any rate. Ring or Carbide guides would be appropriate, maybe with a roller top upgrade, if you have it rebuilt. As @IslandSurf said, hardwood butts used to be quite common, at least for boat and catfish rods. They may be "worthless" as far as monetary value is concerned, but they can still catch fish. Edited August 17, 2018 by afishhunter 0 Go to top

Penn made rods or had rods made for them with the Penn label, at least as early as 1966 or so. My late step father had one when he started dating my mom. I don't know how long he'd had it before they started dating, though. Penn did sell "matched" rod and reel sets back then. I remember seeing them for sale at the local bait and tackle and sporting goods stores. Edited August 18, 2018 by afishhunter 0 Go to top
· #7 Posted September 8, 2018 Clean that rig up and use it. Put a new drag stack in the reel. A Jigmaster has a great feature in the quick change spools. You will never put a price on the memories you create. I still have my first setup from a sporting goods store in Center City, Philly. Imagine that! It's about 5', white Fiberglas with blue threads. I have the cork gently sanded and sealed. I lightly refinished the hardwood as to not remove its scars and character. The Penn Delmar in the pick still rides in the old metal reel seat. Caught a doormat on the thing in Grassy Sound as a child. Your rod and reel will still catch fish! 0 Go to top
· #8 Posted September 23, 2018 Looks like a Harnell. Thread pattern and color, black fiberglass blank, Varmac reel seat 0 Go to top
· #9 Posted September 24, 2018 (edited) Its still not a Harnell LOL and not a Varmac seat. It would be marked if it were Varmac. And.... Im still guessing Montague True Temper or a Montgomery Ward, Sears type rod. Edited September 24, 2018 by 1badf350 0 Go to top
