350 plus great whites have been tagged along the coast lines of Massachusetts and yes they do eat Striped bass along with seals. We also have Nice brown Sharks along our coast line that will take bait and they are powerful swimmers that swim with authority

no thoughts about it having been a really big striper? I had one w/ a mouth literally the size of a 5 gal bucket try to swallow a 34" bass on the end of my line some years back...

The GWs in our area actually appear to target striped bass with some frequency. Both stealing bass hooked on anglers' lines, and naturally in the environment. Seems to be a common prey item for them locally, judging by the comments of some of the marine scientists who study them. Bass are a relatively large food morsel and much slower than the sharks.

Quite a few boat anglers in CCB lose bass to great whites.

Moreso in recent years, but this phenomenon occured historically as well, to fishermen on the outer Cape.
