Cool little fish.

Used to love catching them as a kid. 

They're popular with a bunch of ethnic groups. I've seen the old Italians in Gloucester using short cane poles to fish the crevices in the jetty.

 

I love watching them when I snorkel. In recent years where I snorkel in RI, the schools of little juvenile cunner seem to have disappeared from the caves and overhangs. In their place is the inevitable juvenile black seabass.

 

Cunner can take on the color of their surroundings. When they hang out in bright colored sponges or tunicates, they can look like tropical fish.

Sadly, even though they make great aquarium fish when small, they always lose that bright color and revert to the green/brown color.
