ultravox
My Penn Reel gear does'nt mesh when I'm into a fish. The handle slips, like the main gear and the pinion gear is not connecting.I replaced the Main gear but not the pinion.and it still slips. I was told it might be the drive gear shim washer that's missing. That sounds very logical to me.does anybody have an opinion on this.
handi2
First you should always change the main and pinion gears at the same time. You should add shims to the main gear until the reel feels sluggish. Now you can go back and remove one shim. It should be right. Pull in and out on the handle. It should give the tiniest amount. Sometimes none that’s you can feel.
ultravox
It looks very difficult to replace the pinion gear.so I'm gonna try the shims first, were can I get shims?
LB
Both those gears must be in bad shape if a new main didn't fix it, do as handi2 says.
00eight
I worked on that same problem with my 4500 today. Reel was really stiff after a long cast with 3oz weight. I was missing 2 of the 3 main drive gear shims. Only had one to add but that helped tremendously. I'm new so I'm not sure if we can post links. Just look up Mystic Parts and find the SSV4500. It's part 8a on the schematic. Problem solved, but now my bail won't trip correctly. Good luck!
