Early season bait tip.

For the start of the summer flounder season we don't have a lot of the little fish like the baby seabass and sea robins around to bother us. Some saktes and doggies are the only problem so this is the time to use a delicate but deadly bait for summer flounder if you can find them. Shiners or spearing are right up there with live minnows as my favorite early season flounder baits. In fact the spearing will out fish live minnows on many days. Only problem is when the baby seabass show up they just rip them off the hook but until then I don't go out without them.

Now if you can find frozen smelts in your supermarket with heads on grab a bag. Look just like the spearing but much much larger. Early season flounder killers but very delicate. Let them thaw out overnight in the fridge because a quick thaw makes them a little mushy and their stomachs can split. You cant cast them so just lower it to the bottom gently. the first to the bottom doesn't win it's who gets down there with the best bait. Maany fishermen hook spearing through the eyes but if you take your time and feel around with the hook point you can find a solid spot below the mouth to slip the hook just like a live minnow.

Many smelts are packed with heads off but if you search around you can still find hole smelts.
