I was thinking the head was not flat enough to be a dogfish. But I don’t know my shark IDs.

Do you have a picture of its teeth?   If the teeth are flat crusher type teeth, then I would say that it is definately a Smooth Dogfish.

^^ yup, a very under appreciated and under utilized food. Firm, flaky, mild white meat. Cut base of tail 2/3 way through...let it bleed out. I cut them into 1.5" steak....marinate and grill

In MD you can keep up to 2 smooth dogfish and it appears unlimited spiny dogfish.  Used to be no harvest of spiny dogfish if I'm not mistaken.

These things are a nuisance here in NJ. No limit here but everyone throws them back in the water. Good fight though.
