Are Old Reel Models Still Manufactured The Same Quality As The Originals?

My everyday surfcasting spinner continues to be my Daiwa GS9 that I bought new in approximately 1975.  I was surprised to see that this reel (and other old Daiwa models & other brands as well) are still manufactured for sales outside the US:

This reel (on the web pages above) "looks" like my mid 1970s Daiwa GS9 (except for the handle) built in Japan, but is it the same reel or a cheap reproduction.  My old GS9 is simplistic and built like a tank.  I'd hate to spend a lot of money on a flimsy retro model version of my original.  (I'm uploading a photo of my old reel to this post.)

these reel like the Daiwa 9000c are built like a winch. I still have 3 of those 9000 reel and still in excellent condition. Love them

I would say they are still the same but, possibly the quality of the inners could be made of less durable components.

I would like to say\think they are the same but,who knows.

I still have my old GS-3 and GS 30,my GS-3 is still on my old white glass surf stick hanging on my wall.

I rebuilt them both back in the 80's and after that switched to winch reels for life.

my wife fishes with a BG-20 and my old GS-13 and my original BG-15.

her BG-20 is a new one[2 years old],took it apart right from the box, greased it and found it all looked the same as the originals

simple design, proven design, easy to maintain if needed.

love them always.

still have a 4000C and a 7000C in the rack. Mostly guest reels any more but in A1 shape. Go to's  next to the door are BG20, 710z , and a Wisker SS 2600   all of em older than my grown kids and working like the first day. had a newer Shimano in the 90s, cant remember which but it had a graphite frame and spool. Fish on one night and in the second run. Drag is singing and all of the sudden I hear a plop in the water in front of me and all goes limp like the fish is gone. flicked on my head light and saw all my mono coiling out in front of me. looked down and the spool had broken in half and the front lip portion had gone into the water. watched my line coils stretching out quickly as the fish picked up some speed and quickly got to the arbor knot and yanked it right off of what was left of the spool shaft and the line disappeared. had to laugh walking back to the sand, but have been sticking with my old reels ever since. BG was out with me last night until the wind ran us off the water.  My youngest son wanted a new reel a couple years ago and bought a new Wisker SS 2600. I can seen no difference between my old workhorse and his new one. inside or out.

my very first saltwater rig was a daiwa 7000-c with a 9 ft yellow glass st. Croix,I must have caught 2000 gators on that rig.

stepped up to a brown glass 11 foot st' Croix with 3 cork grips and snapped 4 of them with 2 of them being on the first cast with a big daddy goo-goo eyes swimmer,,3 oz snapped 4 of those monster surf rods.

went back to their yellow glass in 11 foot and a 4000-c.

I still have my 6 ft yellow glass st' Croix bass rod with my old daiwa GS-13 on it.
