NEW YORK (AP) — New York City sued five major oil companies, claiming they have contributed to global warming, on the same day officials announced they will sell off billions in fossil fuel investments from the city’s pension funds.

Mayor Bill de Blasio said the city would be seeking billions of dollars in the lawsuit to recoup money spent for resiliency efforts related to climate change.

“We’re bringing the fight against climate change straight to the fossil fuel companies that knew about its effects and intentionally misled the public to protect their profits,” the Democratic mayor said in a statement. “As climate change continues to worsen, it’s up to the fossil fuel companies whose greed put us in this position to shoulder the cost of making New York safer and more resilient.”

The city alleges the fossil fuel industry was aware for decades that burning fuel was impacting climate change.

the case is based on Exxon Mobils own research papers from 1977 that showed that climate change is man made.

Republicans are the only people in the entire world, literally who don't believe in man made climate change.

if they could, they'd tell you that smoking does not cause lung cancer. nope.

But couldn't the case be made that its the foriegn manufacturing with no known pollution constraints for decades that also contribute? That is if you belive in global warming. The tough part will be to prove .5 degrees over 60 years made an impact

Could exxon/mobil prove that without oil, specific necessities like food, transportation, manufacturing also be at risk, particularly food. When the price of oil goes up, food costs also go up . Back in the 70, 80s....Today,  for the next 3 decades. No oil, no food its that simple.

The city of New York should set an example to the rest of the country by banning from the city anything that burns fossil fuels and any and all types of merchandise that either used fossil fuels in their manufacturing process or contains anything derived from fossil fuels.

that's not the issue. the issue is that they lied about and created an industry of fake science, fake PR etc to hide the truth.

had America accepted man made climate change in the 1970s we wouldn't be behind Europe and Japan in clean energy.

why ? making oil into polymers only requires heating a refined derivative of oil, not burning it.

And just how do you "heat" it, coal, electric, nuclear, fossil fuels??? Whichever way you choose it's massive amounts of power needed and every single power source depends on fossil fuels some how, some way.

no it's not,

Oil Cos have been funding a lot of the fake science that has been generated.

what is really laughable is the deplorables say "follow the money" and they aren't talking about the Oil industry,

they are talking about climate science.
