"Bluefin, the largest of the tunas, can weigh up to 1,000 pounds each, but a long-liner wouldn't bring in one that big. Federal law states that the bluefin cannot weigh more than 2% of the total catch."

 

It's up to the reader to infer that the biggest tunas are cut loose for crab food.

good luck finding one that big anymore...

 

i know that tuna prices have fallen in recent years, but i think its still between $5 and $10/lb...at that price, a longliner will probably find a way to sell a $10,000 fish...

Generally speaking, giant bluefin don't inhabit the waters that most longliners work, which are well offshore, but again that is just a 'general' statement. Bluefin are know to pretty much circumnavigate the Atlantic, with fish tagged off NC having been recaptured in the Mediterranian. That's some serious cruzin if ya ask me!
